Son of the East Pride and Prejudice in the Desert Continues Lavinia Angell 9781492168768 Books

So this is the second installment of what's becoming a favorite trilogy in the JAFF world! In the opening pages Lizzy and Ahmed (aka Fitzwilliam Darcy) are in love, living in sin, and mulling over this pesky marriage business. Ahmed, when backed into a corner, decides to go about this business the right way and takes Lizzy back to Biskra and intends to ask for her hand and find a way to marry her properly.

Into this mayhem of course comes Caroline Bingley, now a married Viscountess. Just when we think Lizzy and Ahmed have overcome their biggest obstacle to marry, she decides to introduce David to the couple, a boy who looks remarkably like Ahmed and it's implied he is the son of both Caroline and Ahmed from a torrid affair long ago. Lizzy in her anguish runs off and doesn't give Ahmed a chance to explain.

Also feeling betrayed by his best friend and sister, Charles Bingley travels back to England with Lizzy and the Gardiners. But of course the sailing isn't smooth and Lizzy finds herself rescued from brigadiers not by Ahmed as she thought (and hoped) but Captain Geoffrey Fitzwilliam. Yes, THAT Fitzwilliam! And wouldn't you know it, he falls in love with Lizzy? Of course he does!

Now, in other stories when this happens I am opposed entirely to Lizzy even considering Darcy's cousin. However, considering Ahmed and his actions I actually found myself rooting for Fitzwilliam for a moment and was hurt for him when Lizzy ultimately rejected him in Hertfordshire. Why is that?

Well, 1) Ahmed, for all his upbringing, culture, whatnot is a domineering force and I was rather chafed at his constant commanding of Elizabeth. My feminist side didn't care for it. In the first story when this happened I accepted it considering the circumstances surrounding their relationship. But he kept doing it! Not good!

2) when Lizzy encountered danger it was Fitzwilliam who came to her rescue. Fitzwilliam was the one who found an estate in Hertfordshire to be near her and win her. Where was Ahmed all this time?! Sure he ended up redeeming himself but he used his money and influence and stayed behind the scenes. Where was the man who flew to rescue Lizzy from Ibraheim?! He doesn't show up until the end!

But he does show up and then I remember why I love this couple. You can't deny how combustible and electric their love is and I am glad they ultimately find happiness through marriage.

Now to my other complaints, personal and nit picky as they are. I get Darcy's/Ahmed's hatred for Englishmen and England considering his background, but if he was willing to come all the way to take a boy (who turns out is not really his son) and make him his heir, why can't he find an iota of caring for his natural sister Georgiana? If he really renounced anything to do with Derbyshire why couldn't he just sign it over to her or whoever? In this instance I agreed with Fitzwilliam who claimed he was derelict in his duty and honor.

And I totally called it when Ahmed showed up to speak to Mr. Bennet in full Englishman attire. I loved him for it and loved him for making these few adjustments to marry Elizabeth. But was that the extent of his compromise? Elizabeth just left everything and everyone behind and Ahmed is allowing her to change herself without him really changing? He did enough to marry her but is that all?

I hope these are addressed in the final installment but even if they're not I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can't wait to read the third part.

One final note: I love Charles Bingley in this story. He really is the brother we all want and Lizzy needed. One of my favorite characterizations of him!

What a different rendition of P&P , the description made you fell you were in the desert with them, loved the story line and the major players. I recommend all three books
I love this second book as well as the first. Lavinia please write a third. It is very original and I have read of 300 variations. On my month cruise I read 13 variations and this is definitely not the run of the mill P&P.
Keep writing and don't forget about Ahmed
This book is full of adventure, misunderstandings, culture shock and surprises... A bit too much romance for me and not enough left to my Janeite imagination in some pages... but interesting premise and very different that any other "what if" P & P variation.
I truly enjoyed this P & P variation with the Sheik and fearless Lizzy caught up in love among the dunes... I think Ms Angell is a wonderful writer... I think anytime you can re-imagine these amazing characters and still get the flavor of Austen's loving couple, something is going right... I loved the plot development that brought them all back to England, and eagerly await the next step in this story! Good job!
At one time in my life I was fascinated by Arabian sheiks of old. When I found and read Lavinia Angell's "The Sheik of Araby" I was fascinated all over again; then she wrote this sequel! I am in heaven when reading (and re-reading) both of her books! Her storytelling has you seeing the bright sun while feeling the horses' hoof beats; the pain and the emotions of the characters; the beauty and glory of the land. The chemistry between Elizabeth and the Sheik is yummy; her relationship with her young maid is heartwarming. Re-reading is mandatory!!! (With summertime approaching it is probably a good idea to read at the beach -- then you'll be able to feel the sand between your toes, too!)
Any awkwardness (in the dialogue) in the first volume is resolved in this second volume of the trilogy. I think you really need to read the first two to get the whole of this story. Bingley's and Col. Fitzwilliam's characters are wonderfully developed. There were things I didn't like, but I attribute this to good writing I was getting angry and frustrated with Elizabeth's behavior, Caroline's scheming, the discomfort arising from Col. Fitzwilliam's pursuit! In most variations, I get tired of badly-behaved Lydia and Wickham, the repulsive Collins and obliging Charlotte, and feel like some variants can just drop them. I found myself wishing we could get away from the distracting sub-plots and get back to Elizabeth and Ahmed/Darcy, so if I had one criticism, it would be to spend more time there; once we return to the main story line, I found myself wanting more time with our main protagonists and a less rushed resolution. All in all, a very nice variation.
A few yrs ago I read the first book and I remembered it as a book I liked so I picked this one up to read. And though I did enjoy the stories continuation I was not as enamored of the story as I first thought. It is loosely a P&P story that takes place in the East Indies. The last story ended with Elizabeth and the Sheik(Darcy) together but not married. So this starts out with the sheik trying to remedy that. But that is not easy because he is considered a villain, plus there is Caroline Bingley to try and separate them. She throws obstacles in there way. Than Elizabeth heads back to England. So it's seems all is lost but we know we will get our HEA.

What I didn't like was that this Darcy was more than just proud. He seemed emotionally abusive. He ruled and everyone listened even more if you were a women. And Elizabeth was just too compliant, I know she does verbally give him a set down but really she is submissive with him in words and action. I realize that this is written this way because of where the story takes place. I did enjoy the read but this is not a fav for me. I'm off to read the next installment. Hopefully I will be enjoying it more.
